Premier League Week 6: Predictions, Odds and Results

Pintsized Background

Week 6 of the Premier League welcomes the good old Merseyside Derby. Everton finds themselves down bad while Liverpool appears to have rebuilt themselves, yet there is rarely a boring nor controversial local clash. Historically though, aside from a 2-0 win at Anfield in 2021, Everton has not beaten Liverpool since October 2010 – featuring goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta.

Elsewhere on the menu, there is a delectable early relegation scrap between Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest. West Ham has a chance to snatch points up at a broken, downtrodden Stamford Bridge. Undefeated Arsenal also travels to Old Trafford against a rejuvenated Manchester United, buoyed by a late flurry in the transfer window and reshaped backline.

Everton vs Liverpool

Pintsized

While Lampard may have stopped the rot with three draws on the trot, the performances on the pitch have been disconcerting. Alex Iwobi has found a new home in midfield, while Anthony Gordon can finally play out wide now that new boy, Neil Maupay, can take up the role of striker. Even with an identifiable shape, it will be the biggest shock of the weekend if Lamps’ tactical ineptitude can hold off a bolstered Liverpool attack with returning Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

Prediction: 1-4

Ryan

I thought it was only United who benefitted from Fergie Time? That myth was completely smashed mid-week when 5 minutes became 8 for Liverpool but that’s for another day. Bringing an extra midfielder in Arthur in was a necessity more than a luxury. Everton meanwhile brought in extra players of their own which they’ll desperately need although a point at Leeds helps things. Even at this early stage, it looks like they’ll be in yet another relegation scrap. Form does go out of the window for derbies but Liverpool should have too much without Klopp Time.

Prediction: 0-2

Steviano

Assuming the final whistle has now been blown in the Newcastle game then Liverpool will be free to face their Merseyside rivals in the lunchtime kick off.  B2B wins have propelled the Reds up to 6th and the return of Nunez from suspension should be fun to watch as Everton defenders (I use the term loosely) will be out to wind him up.  Liverpool to make it 3 in a row and at least one sending off.

Tottenham vs Fulham

Pintsized

At this point last season, the Spud Army had just swallowed 3-0 defeats to Crystal Palace and Chelsea, before a 3-1 humbling to Arsenal in Gameweek 6. In 2022-23, under Antonio Conte, Spurs have conceded just four goals all season. Fulham has sprung several surprises with feisty, high-tempo, attacking football since their promotion. Whether more Mitrovic magic can carry the Cottagers against one of the league’s top defences is less convincing.

Prediction: 2-1

Ryan

Speaking of derbies, Spurs had a battle on their hands at the London Stadium. They’ll perhaps be ruing their chance to get 3 points but the next game is the one where they can make this up. Their opponents have been the surprise package of the season so far and they’ll certainly be up for another big showing after a brilliant win against in-form Brighton. Expect another tight affair where the quality of Spurs should shine through.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

Fulham are the early season surprise package looking well organised and with only one defeat away to top of the table Arsenal so far – the tests for the squad depth will come though and they need to bank points early for comfort while Mitrovic is hot but I don’t see it in this one.

Prediction: 2-1

Notts Forest vs Bournemouth

Pintsized

To be fair to Forest, at least they went out there and tried to bring the game to Manchester City. It led to a 6-0 spanking, but goal difference is the least of the worries for a recently promoted side. Bournemouth bounced back well to secure a point against Wolves after their 9-0 humiliation against Liverpool. No sign of a new manager on the horizon is a red flag, however.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

This was a Championship fixture last season and there’s every chance it could be the same again next season. Forest will be thankful not to be playing against City for a while and a match against Bournemouth seems like the perfect cleanser. Bournemouth will also be thankful that they’re not facing a big team now and even managed not to lose against Wolves. That being said, it looks like they’re in trouble and a loss to Forest will solidify it.

Prediction: 3-1

Steviano

6-pointer anyone – Forest are amongst the top-10 spenders in Europe in this window although to be fair they could hardly field a 5-a-sdie team in the summer as loanees returned and contracts expired.  Time will tell if it’s money well spent compared to Bournemouth’s frugal approach but it should give them the edge in this one.

Prediction: 2-1

Chelsea vs West Ham

Pintsized

After the start we endured, I’m more than content with West Ham taking a point from Spurs in the mid-week. Many new faces will likely take to January until the ideal starting XI is found. Meanwhile, Chelsea is in tatters. Despite the huge money dropped over the summer, Tuchel is facing early calls for the sack from a fanbase who were expecting title contention. It sure doesn’t help that Chelsea has only filled the vacant striker hole via an emergency last-minute signing, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Prediction: 1-1

Ryan

This is always an interesting match that throws up some tight and sometimes unpredictable results and this should be no exception. Chelsea continues to be inconsistent and a loss against Southampton only highlights this. West Ham did well to take a point away from their rivals and will fancy another bite against one of the Top 6. Will Aubameyang be the answer to striker woes for the home side? That remains to be seen and a draw seems a likely prediction.

Prediction: 1-1

Steviano

Chelsea is still bedding in a major squad overhaul after the biggest spree in premier league history which finally included a striker – albeit a short-term fix with Aubamayang.  That said I expect Auba to win over the crowd early with winning goals in this one against a Hammers team struggling to score themselves.

Prediction: 3-1

Brentford vs Leeds

Pintsized

A little bit of the Leeds hype has died down after a humbling 1-1 draw to Everton. Sure, the Toffees did everything in their power to spoil the game, but a top-half table outfit has to put away relegation fodder. Meanwhile, Brentford continues to suffer from defensive lapses. The problem may exacerbate come January if David Raya finds himself snapped up.

Prediction: 2-2

Ryan

Once again: ‘thank you Leeds for being the most unpredictable team in the league’. I feel like this is something that’ll be copy and pasted every week. A potential win against Everton didn’t come to fruition but a point is better than nothing. Speaking of a point, that’s exactly what Brentford brought back from Selhurst Park which should be a helpful contribution in their season. This is a difficult one to call so I’ll go down the middle.

Prediction: 2-2

Steviano

Both teams should be safe this season although mid-table obscurity is likely to be the peak of their ambitions – should be an ok game although no mouth-watering deadline day signings to spice this one up.

Prediction: 2-2

Wolves vs Southampton

Pintsized

Finally. Bruno Lage has broken and signed a striker, 25-year-old Austrian, Sasa Kalajdzic. It isn’t a name that will grab most headlines, yet any Kalajdzic owns a solid conversion rate in the Bundesliga for Stuttgart. Either way, he cannot produce fewer than Wolves’ 2 team goals in the league so far. Southampton thoroughly outplayed Chelsea in the mid-week, yet they will face a more challenging puzzle in the Wolves backline.

Prediction: 1-0

Ryan

You may not be able to predict a Wolves result but one thing is for certain, there won’t be many goals. Once again proven against Bournemouth in a pretty dead draw. Southampton, or should I say Man City B, will be pumped after a big win against Chelsea. Their confidence should be high but their energy levels may not be and might have to settle for a point.

Prediction: 1-1

Steviano

Wolves have retained their defensive prowess from last season with only Brighton having conceded fewer so far however their inability to score has become a real issue and annoying as it may be Southampton are likely to win this one.

Prediction: 0-1

Newcastle vs Crystal Palace

Pintsized

Newcastle has every right to be bitterly disappointed that they dropped a valuable point at Anfield. A classic case of shoddy officiating in what is widely deemed as the top league worldwide. Palace is struggling to stop leaking at the back, but their attack, spearheaded by Zaha, is a hard day’s work for anyone in the league.

Prediction: 2-1

Ryan

Newcastle will feel aggrieved at not bringing back anything from Anfield. You won’t see many more instances of added time being extended by 3 minutes this season. Still they’ll take a lot of heart from that performance to carry on for the rest of the season. Crystal Palace are also in a positive mood but will be disappointed not to have won against Brentford at home. Both teams could put on a cracker and home advantage should tip the balance.

Prediction: 3-2

Steviano

Toon fans are excited with the arrival of Isak who almost earned them a point at Anfield on debut and he will be keen to impress the home fans in this one.  Palace have made a decent start and got some of the big games out of the way – expect them to climb the table a bit after this one.

Aston Villa vs Manchester City

Pintsized

There is a feeling that if Villa is torn apart at home, the pressure may become insurmountable on Stevie G. For all their riches in the centre of the park, very few worthwhile chances have been created so far. Additionally, Mings has somewhat been outed as a fair bit of hype. Haaland finds himself in crazy form, while Julian Alvarez’s brace ensures City have an elite replacement in the ranks.

Prediction: 0-3

Ryan

Steven Gerrard should be near the top of the list for managers to be sacked next. Admittedly losing a close affair with Arsenal isn’t the most disappointing result but the downward spiral is very worrying. A downward spiral is quite the opposite to what City are experiencing at the moment and a 6-0 demolition job over Championship fodder only helps. Both trends should continue here with Pep putting another nail in the coffin for Stevie G’s managerial reign.

Prediction: 0-3

Steviano

Hmm with Haaland eyeing up a record 3 hat tricks in a row this does not bode well for a Villa team shorn of confidence and the pressure is firmly on Stevie G who may find the owners have as much patience as they did when they (unfairly) jettisoned Dean Smith.

Prediction: 1-4

Premier League Week 6

Brighton vs Leicester City

Pintsized

Leicester looks well and truly dusted. Attempted heavy possession-based football without any end product. Jamie Vardy seems to have fallen off an athletic cliff – perhaps the addition of Wout Faes will allow Wilfred Ndidi back into the midfield and restore some sort of order. For the time being, Potter’s classy Brighton should ease to victory.

Prediction: 3-0

Ryan

What on earth is happening at the King Power stadium? Brendan Rodgers has been confusingly sold short by his board with plenty of asset stripping and not much replacing them. A dour loss to Man United doesn’t do much to help matters. If the manager goes, they might be in deep trouble. Much like last season, Brighton are on a hot streak. Losing against Fulham halted some momentum but right now, they couldn’t have found an easier game to bounce back. This should be a fairly routine win for the Seagulls.

Prediction: 3-1

Steviano

Brighton will be looking to rectify an unexpected defeat to Fulham last time out and this should be the perfect game for them as they face a Leicester team who have well and truly stagnated.

Prediction: 2-0

Manchester United vs Arsenal

Pintsized

A historic grudge match between two of the decade’s most banter teams. Finally, the two slumbering giants appear to be waking up once again. Arsenal is a majestic beast in attack, yet their overstretched wings will offer holes for United’s blistering pace attack to exploit. Without a striker of note available, United may well rue the chances they create.

Prediction: 2-2

Ryan

The glory days of Ferguson vs Wenger spring to mind when it comes to this fixture and this particular game might feel the closest thing to sparking those feelings. United have won 3 on a trot without being truly spectacular offensively. Their defence is a sight for sore eyes with Varane and Martinez looking red hot. Arsenal are red hot themselves with a 100% record. They can only beat what’s put in front of them but their opponents have been truly unremarkable. This is their first big test and it remains to be seen how they’ll cope. It should be a close one and maybe going with my heart somewhat, I back United to continue their winning streak.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

You feel there is a fragility to United’s recent renaissance with less convincing victories against the Saints and Foxes since the impressive win over Liverpool.  This will test the new-found confidence with Arsenal boasting a 100% start although they have yet to face top half opposition yet – this might be a good yard stick for both teams.

Prediction: 2-2
