Premier League Week 5

Crystal Palace vs Brentford
Pintsized
After some reflection, Crystal Palace should gain confidence from their willing yet ultimately losing effort at the Etihad Stadium. If Ederson hadn’t received the kindest refereeing decision of the season so far, the Eagles could have tightened the screw. Brentford’s only victory and clean sheet of the year came against a thoroughly disjointed United side. Summer signings, Ben Mee and Aaron Hickey, still require time to gel into a unified backline.
Prediction: 1-1
Ryan
For the majority of the match, Crystal Palace were going back to London with 3 points but then City struck back in typical fashion to bring things down back to reality. They still look like the better team than their opponents who had to rescue a point against an unimpressive Everton. The home side won’t be disheartened by Saturday and should be spurred on to do the job on seemingly lesser opposition.
Prediction: 2-0
Steviano
In what will probably still be a mid-table clash when the two sides meet again I fancy Palace to bank on their home form in this one.
Prediction: 2-1

Fulham vs Brighton
Pintsized
Fulham has proved a far more feisty outfit in the top flight this time around. Overreliance on Aleksandar Mitrovic is setting up the Cottagers for a painful descent if there is any January transfer movement, but it’s entertaining to watch for now. Potter will be rubbing his hands with glee after offloading Neil Maupay for £10.62million. With only a year left on his contract, Brighton has done well to fleece Everton of a less than proven goalscorer.
Prediction: 0-1
Ryan
Both of these sides have had stronger than expected starts to the season with Fulham feeling a bit hard done by at the Emirates whilst Brighton proved the better of the in-form teams against Leeds. All signs point to a Brighton win but Fulham have proven a tough nut to crack so far and I can see them proving too stubborn to break down.
Prediction: 0-0
Steviano
Brighton continue to defy the odds with another great start to the season and will be desperate to hold on to Caicedo at least until the Jan transfer window. Fulham have also made a good start but Brighton should be the better team.
Prediction: 1-2

Southampton vs Chelsea
Pintsized
A spirited, neutralising gameplan almost shaved another point from their Manchester United bunny. Southampton is slowly transitioning away from previously heavy-pressing towards a more focused possession-based game. It’s questionable whether Che Adams can carry much of the goal-scoring contribution throughout the season. Tuchel continues to tinker with his squad – the German is yet to find a perfect relationship between Reece James and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
Prediction: 0-2
Ryan
On paper, playing two top teams back to back is not an easy ask for Southampton. They were second best against United but it was from an inspirational watch where the home team could have come away with more. Speaking of times that are stuttering, Chelsea did pick up 3 points with 10 men which is certainly a positive until you realise their opponents are a free falling Leicester. By that reckoning, I’ll call this one to be a curveball and go for a nervy home win.
Prediction: 1-0
Steviano
Chelsea are still looking for a number 9 with Aubamayang contract demands proving elusive at this time but should still have too much firepower for Southampton shorn of last season’s Chelsea loanee Broja.
Prediction: 1-2

Leeds vs Everton
Pintsized
Leed’s lack of individual quality was exposed against a well-oiled Brighton side. Not that it should matter against Everton – the Toffees’ low-block will come under serious fire. The recent addition of Neil Maupay may see Everton keep the ball in dangerous areas for longer. Importantly, Gordon will be allowed the freedom to roam on the wings.
Prediction: 2-0
Ryan
Thank you Leeds for being the most annoying team to predict in the league. The one time I decide it’s their week to win, they go and lose away to Brighton. Their opponents didn’t lose at least which is more they can hope for at the moment. 2 points from 4 games is nothing to be proud of however and this needs to see an upturn. I don’t see that happening here.
Prediction: 2-1
Steviano
I’m not sure that the arrival of Neil Maupay’s 8 goals a season will be exciting any of the Everton fans and this could finally be the season they exit the top flight. Leeds are full of confidence despite a narrow defeat to Brighton last time out and I expect the feel good factor to continue.
Prediction: 3-1

Bournemouth vs Wolves
Pintsized
No manager. A couple of Premier League quality players. No promise of summer signings. Bournemouth looks as good as dead already. Wolves were unfortunate to drop points after an Allan Saint-Maximin rocket, but it’s their own damn fault for prioritising aesthetics over pragmatism.
Prediction: 0-2
Ryan
The manager sacking bug has struck early with Scott Parker being the first victim this season. Having a Championship level squad and calling the board up on it probably accelerated things in that respect. A 9-0 drubbing sealed it. Their opponents can’t seem to buy a win despite a solid, stingey defence that only a wonder strike could break. Unfortunately Newcastle provided said screamer. This has draw written all over it – no new manager bounce and no attacking threat from Wolves.
Prediction: 0-0
Steviano
In the words of UB40 Cherries O O O. Scott Parker has paid the ultimate price for stating what everyone else can see in that the chronic lack of investment will make this an impossible job although perhaps not 9-0 impossible. Looking like this season’s Norwich they should come up short in this one.
Prediction: 0-3

Manchester City vs Notts Forest
Pintsized
Shipping five goals in two matches will have Pep pulling his imaginary hair out. Kyle Walker’s declining athleticism is exposing his lack of positional awareness. Poor City will have to open their blank chequebook once again. Steve Cooper is still getting to grips with his fresh-faced squad, but there were positive signs as Dean Henderson remains a wall and his wingers produce regular chances.
Prediction: 4-1
Ryan
Yikes, surely it’s only a case of how many goals as opposed to who will score them? City showcased champion material with their big comeback against a positive Palace whilst Forest ultimately crumbled at home to Harry Kane. It may be a showcase for Dean Henderson who continues to try and prove to his parent club why they should have kept him but ultimately he’ll be picking the ball out of his net multiple times.
Prediction: 4-0
Steviano
I’m not entirely sure but it seems Pep wants to give every team a 2-goal start in order to make it more of a challenge for him. Quantity may keep Forest up even if quality won’t necessarily but this is one where quality is required. City to rest Haaland and give Alvarez his first start is my prediction.
Prediction: 4-1

Arsenal vs Aston Villa
Pintsized
Villa’s high-flying fullbacks are going to leave lots of real estate for Arsenal’s spritely front-line to expose. Only Ollie Watkins is enjoying yet another stellar start to the season in an underperforming team – Gerrard desperately needs a tactical rethink. Expecting Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli to run rampant.
Prediction: 3-0
Ryan
Two questions here: will Arsenal realistically be in the title race this season? Will Steven Gerrard be the next to join his England colleague on the chopping block? My answer to these questions is No and Yes. Having said that, Arsenal’s 100% record is unmatched so far despite the opposition whilst Villa couldn’t be further away from that. Expect the trends to continue in the same direction for both sides.
Prediction: 3-0
Steviano
And another team queieing up for the wrong end of the table – Villa’s squad should be able to get them to lower mid-table but the feel-good factor has definitely left the building. Arsenal are yet to be tested but as they say you can only beat what’s in front of you.
Prediction: 3-0

West Ham vs Tottenham
Pintsized
A tasty grudge match. Moyesiah will have felt immense relief after securing the first domestic win of the season. The arrival of Lucas Paquetá concludes one of the most exciting transfer windows in the Hammer’s history. Conte has Spurs ticking, but he isn’t wrong to suggest that money needs to be pumped in if they want to challenge in all competitions.
Prediction: 2-2
Ryan
Is this the first recognised derby of the season? Matches between these sides are normally entertaining and this one should be no different. West Ham will feel relief after posting their first win of the season against Villa. Spurs did the job on Forest, or should I say Harry Kane did the job. They’re going to need more than that to get one over their rivals. With that morale-boosting win, West Ham will feel more confident in getting something from this potentially tough game.
Prediction: 1-1
Steviano
The Hammers bank balance is taking a hit this season including a record breaking signing of Paqueta who was on the radar of a lot of big clubs. May be too early for all the new signings to gel but I expect West Ham to be climbing the table before too long.
Prediction: 1-2

Liverpool vs Newcastle
Pintsized
Klopp unleashed a hell of a derby day hangover with a 9-0 thumping of Bournemouth. Shame that it accounts for just three points in the grand scheme of things. If Newcastle is without Bruno Guimaraes, the Toon army will be sorely outgunned in the centre of the park, even with Liverpool’s extensive injury list.
Prediction: 2-0
Ryan
Is that the best response to losing to your hated rivals? There can’t be many better comeback results than the 9-0 witnessed at Anfield. A repeat of this against Newcastle is near impossible with the Geordies looking like they mean business this season. They have comebacks in their locker as witnessed at Molineux. Liverpool’s win should give them momentum to pick up another but it should be really close.
Prediction: 2-1
Steviano
This could be a classic as Liverpool restored normal attacking service with the humiliation of Bournemouth whilst Newcastle will be hoping to see a return for new record signing Isak.
Prediction: 3-2

Leicester vs Man United
Pintsized
Wesley Fofana has departed to Stamford Bridge to the tune of £31.5million. The French prospect is a further blow to Leicester’s paper-thin squad, yet the 21-year-old had hardly been playing for the badge this season. Ten Hag will take great comfort in United’s defensive solidity against Southampton away, justifying his decision to drop Maguire and Shaw. With the recent addition of Antony for around £85million, United have invested in the long-term future of their attack – hopefully linking up with Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Elanga.
Prediction: 1-2
Ryan
What’s happening at Leicester? They seem content selling their assets without replacing them which makes you question the activities and mood inside the club. It’s an odd one considering they’ve been consistently top 10 the last few seasons. Speaking of odd, United posted their first away win since February and first back to back wins in just as long. It wasn’t pretty against Southampton but very effective in gaining the desired result.
The aim is still the same in getting the Glazers out however and no shiny new signings will gloss over that fact. Antony being a left-footed winger will offer Ten Hag more options up front however. I still don’t trust that squad, no amount of PR will cover that, but they’re coming up against one of the few sides in potentially worse shape so I’ll go for a win.
Prediction: 1-2
Steviano
Although beating Southampton doesn’t have the same kudos as beating Liverpool it was critical for Ten Hag to get back to back wins under his belt. Leicester are desperate for any kind of win as they still haven’t signed a single outfield player and look like losing star defender Fofana to Chelsea – worrying times for the Foxes.
Prediction: 1-3
