Well, it wouldn’t be the start of the season if West Ham weren’t sitting firmly at the bottom of the table. Welcome back to Premier League Week 4 predictions – with Liverpool looking to earn their first victory and the Hammers their first goal. Premier League Week 4
Saturday, 27 August 2022
Southampton vs Manchester United
Pintsized
How many times have we seen Manchester United pull a big result out of their backside, before capitulating to less than stellar opposition the very next game? Southampton proved a boogey team to United last season, holding the Red Devils to a set of 1-1 draws. With Erik ten Hag more willing to tamper with his tactics on a game-by-game basis, a heavier possession-based approach may favour a renewed United.
Prediction: 1-3
Ryan
Who would have seen that performance coming from United? As Gary Neville said on Monday, he couldn’t have imagined anything like it. The win against Liverpool was very convincing although questions still remain in the keeper and right back positions in addition to trying to rely on a fragile Martial. Southampton are coming off a strong result of their own with a big win at Leicester. The big thing is consistency and neither of these teams have proven to be the most consistent teams in recent years. As a result, a draw seems on the cards.
Prediction: 1-1
Steviano
Will the real Man U please stand up – after the humiliation at Brentford they then (as predicted by no-one) put Liverpool to the sword. Ten Hag has made it clear he doesn’t stand on reputations with Ronaldo and Maguire sat on the bench and the team benefited from that although the club’s transfer policy still seems mixed with Depay the latest name linked. Southampton continue to be an annoying fly in the premier league – contributing nothing but still there.
Prediction: 2-2

Chelsea vs Leicester City
Pintsized
Two teams finding themselves very down on their luck. Raheem Sterling has not answered Tuchel’s issues in front of the goal. So much so that the London outfit is weighing up an eye-watering £60million for Everton’s Anthony Gordon. Until Leicester sign a Premier League quality goalkeeper, their troubles will persist.
Prediction: 1-0
Ryan
Two teams who are very short on confidence. The home side were thoroughly torn apart by a surprising Leeds side whilst the away team were shocked by a courageous Southampton. Chelsea have at least invested heavily in their squad but what’s happening at Leicester remains a big mystery with a massive exit for Fofana to their opponents. A nervy, scrappy affair here.
Prediction: 0-0
Steviano
Contrarily neither of these teams have started as they hoped and it looks like being a difficult season for Foxes fans who are unlikely to be inspired by their one signing of the summer – back up keeper “Alex Smithies” from Cardiff [I had to google him]. Chelsea will spend their way out of it although another stroppy striker at 33-yr old doesn’t smack of forward planning.
Prediction: 2-1

Brighton vs Leeds United
Pintsized
Graham Potter well and truly out-tactic’d a freshfaced West Ham side. Danny Welbeck is experiencing a minor career renaissance, yet there is a sickly feeling that an injury is only just around the corner for the striker. Jesse Marsch has Leeds busting their guts in a similar manner to Marcelo Bielsa, yet this time with a smidge greater shape in and out of transition.
Prediction: 1-1
Ryan
Two teams in form with attacking styles of play should make for an interesting encounter. Brighton impressed against West Ham whilst Leeds shocked a Chelsea side with great ambitions. It’s quite a tough one to predict but against my usual uncertainty when it comes to Leeds, I’ll back the away side to continue their good form.
Prediction: 1-2
Steviano
I didn’t have this pegged as a top 6 clash at the start of the season but both teams have made better than predicted starts. Brighton continue to do well despite the annual asset stripping sale whist Leeds new look off-fence tore Chelsea apart in the last match. Should be a fun game.
Prediction: 2-2

Manchester City vs Crystal Palace
Pintsized
Manchester City is unlikely to rue their bizarre six-goal thriller against Newcastle, but Pep will kick himself for not pushing an early advantage over title contenders, Chelsea and Liverpool. Kevin De Bruyne continues to edge himself towards Ballon d’Or contention. Crystal Palace faces a yo-yo season, relying heavily on Wilfried Zaha to break opposing lines and produce a bit of magic.
Prediction: 2-0
Ryan
The home side lost their 100% record with an early season classic against Newcastle where they had to comeback a couple of times. The away side blew past Aston Villa to make a statement that Vieira’s Palace are here to stay. Last season’s encounter was one of City’s slip-ups in their recent title-winning campaign and whilst lightning could strike twice, especially with the Eagles decent the Etihad, I don’t see that happening on this occasion.
Prediction: 3-1
Steviano
City have a mini injury crisis at the back with 3 of 5 centre halves out however they will still be hoping to avoid a repeat of last season’s double over them by Palace and I expect them to put that right. Palace like Bournemouth will have City, Arsenal and Liverpool over with and can see where there season is likely to lead in the next few matches.
Prediction: 3-1

Liverpool vs Bournemouth
Pintsized
A humiliating 2-1 loss to fierce rivals, United, has left Liverpool on their knees. How has a quadruple challenging team been reduced to such a limp mess? A long list of injuries and a lack of vitamin Mane. Bournemouth is aiming to pull off the impossible, however, in staying up with a Championship-calibre squad. Back a Klopp turnaround.
Prediction: 3-0
Ryan
Forget going for the title, Liverpool need to make sure they’re playing in the top flight. All jokes aside, losing to their struggling rivals without putting up much of a fight (according to everyone but Klopp) is worrying. Injuries might not be helping but it looks like a squad suffering from burnout from the end of last season falling short of the Premiership and Champions League. On paper, things don’t get easier for Bournemouth who had to suffer with a home pasting against Arsenal. They should however fancy their chances against a team low on confidence. This should be a tense affair but the home team should pick up their first win of the season.
Prediction: 2-0
Steviano
I’m sure Frank Lampard would have been delighted to be one place behind the Merseyside rivals after 3 games although not like this – Liverpool have a lot of injuries which isn’t helping but are still vastly underperforming. Bournemouth will be glad to get this one over with after Arsenal and City in the last 2 games they can look forward to their season starting properly.
Prediction: 2-0

Brentford vs Everton
Pintsized
Frailty at the back may hamper Brentford throughout the season – laying pressure on their heavy artillery up front to out-score opponents to victory. Thankfully for the Bees, the Toffees are toothless. Losing Gordon would allow Everton to seek out a frontline striker. Salomon Rondon cannot continue to be wheeled out.
Prediction: 2-0
Ryan
Could this be a Championship match next season? If I had to pick a side from this clash to face the chop, Everton are more likely to do so. Having to rescue a point against Forest at home, this is a club in some trouble. Brentford were second best against Fulham last week but they at least offered something for their supporters to be excited about. This clash is a perfect one for the home team and they should get back to winning ways here.
Prediction: 3-0
Steviano
I think Brentford will be too strong at home for the Toffees who’s lack of goals is going to haunt them – if they get £60m (really?) for Gordon they could do worse than bring Toney back with them to Merseyside.
Prediction: 3-1

Arsenal vs Fulham
Pintsized
Can this Arsenal side legitimately challenge for the Premier League title this season? Arteta and his young Gunners have sparkled in the opening three games, scoring with scary regularity. Gabriel Jesus is shaping up already as the signing of the season, whilst Martin Odegaard is finding that ’16-year-old wunderkind’ level of form. Fulham has scrambled 5 points so far, 5 more than any sane fan would have expected. Long live the Mitrovic hype train.
Prediction: 3-1
Ryan
Arsenal are the team in form and are the only ones with a perfect 100% record. The signs are looking positive for them although it’s unlikely to keep on going all season. Beating former Championship fodder doesn’t harm the cause. Speaking of which, Fulham have made a bright start to their season continuing with a win against Brentford. Common logic dictates a home win and whilst I agree that this should be the case, I don’t think it’ll be as clear cut as many imagine.
Prediction: 2-1
Steviano
Both teams off to great starts with Arsenal the only 100% record and Fulham unbeaten. Arsenal have yet to face any of their main rivals though and this will be the second of the newly promoted teams they’ll face plus the win over Leiciester. Fulham’s O to go after this one but they have already shown some promise – their season will depend on Mitrovic continuing to score though.
Prediction: 2-0

Premier League Week 4
Sunday, 28 August 2022
Wolves vs Newcastle
Pintsized
One goal. That is the grand total of Wolves in front of goal this season (granted, they smashed two past Preston in the EFL Cup second round). For all of their excellence in distributing the ball and attacking zones, Wolves desperately need a player who can offer at least 15 goals a season. Meanwhile, Newcastle seems to have finally realised they have a blank cheque to play with. Alexander Isak hasn’t been running rife in Spain, but it’s far too early to write off the well-respected prospect.
Prediction: 1-1
Ryan
One thing that is practically guaranteed from Wolves matches is that you’re not going to see many goals. Whilst they may gain some valuable points from this, they’ll also lose some from that as their lack of offensive firepower continues to haunt them. The away side are looking all sorts of refreshed and positive overall, with morale at a high after a very strong showing against the current champions. Their matches against Wolves tend to be low scoring ones and this should be no exception. What will buck the trend is an important Newcastle win.
Prediction: 0-1
Steviano
Wolves still have the same attacking problem as last season (i.e. no attack) but seem to have lost their defensive prowess as they sit in the bottom 3. Newcastle meanwhile are flying high with confidence and put in a great display against City for the first 60 minutes last week.
Prediction: 1-3

Aston Villa vs West HAm
Pintsized
Right. This is where the season kicks off properly. Steven Gerrard has so far proven tactically inept for the top leagues just yet. Whilst the Hammers do risk all and any squad cohesion with landmark transfers over the summer – there are positive foundations as exhibited in the Conference League qualifying matches. We have to start Scamacca, the Hammers have been crying out for a true striker for years.
Prediction: 0-2
Ryan
Two teams sharing the same coloured kits but also the same results from last week with losses to Crystal Palace and Brighton respectively. Moyes has some credit in the bank with the impressive job he’s done at West Ham but Gerrard is facing his biggest managerial challenge at the moment. Both clubs are desperate for points and they’ll have to settle for a share of the spoils.
Prediction: 2-2
Steviano
This feels like Burnley for me last season where I kept predicting Dyche would turn it around but surely the Moyesiah will be resurrected soon – a bagful of mid-week Euro goals should give them some confidence and bring them level with a Villa team who seem to have returned to their previous level after the initial Gerrard impact.
Prediction: 1-2

Nottingham Forest vs Tottenham
Pintsized
Forest will be kicking themselves that they dropped two points against a fellow relegation candidate. Dean Henderson has played exceptionally well between the sticks, raising a firm middle finger towards United’s preference for De Gea. Harry Kane is slowly returning to form in a Spurs side that is creating regular, high-quality chances from the wings.
Prediction: 0-2
Ryan
Forest have recovered well from their first week disappointment with 4 points from the following 2 games and they’ll hope to continue this trend against Spurs. The away side got the job done against Wolves which is all you can ask for but they’ll need that approach and then some to maintain their winning streak. This is one of those matches where the underdogs will get their licks in and show out against the favourites but ultimately the difference in quality will prove too much in the end.
Prediction: 1-2
Steviano
Steve Cooper is the proverbial kid in the sweet shop as his transfer spree knows no limits – he must have filled his Panini album by now. Quantity is no substitute for quality however and Spurs should win this but it could be another fun game to watch.
Prediction: 2-3
