Leeds on their knees, Tottenham’s hype train derailed and Arsenal cooling off – Premier League Week 14 is shaping up to be the most significant footballing week so far. With just three weekends remaining until World Cup 2022, don’t be surprised if some players start to drop off with one eye on the biggest prize in the game.

The pick of the late October fixtures has to be the London rivalry between Arsenal and Chelsea. After dropping a clanger against PSV, Arsenal finds themselves in a rare patch of poor form this campaign. Meanwhile, Graham Potter continues to revitalise Chelsea back into title contenders.

Premier League Week 14
Saturday, 29 October 2022

Leicester City vs Manchester City

Pintsized

Brendan Rodgers deserves credit for digging Leicester out of the relegation zone after a catastrophic start to the season. The Foxes have faced no issues scoring, netting 21 times already, yet their defensive frailty has left them swallowing seven defeats. This may be the game to triple captain Erling Haaland…

Prediction: 4-0

Ryan

As somewhat predicted, Brendan Rodgers has managed to turn horrible form around into consecutive wins including a demolition job at Molineux. Speaking of demolition jobs, City are a team used to that although recent results haven’t been as productive. A nervy opening should eventually give way to a routine away win.

Prediction: 1-3

Newcastle vs Aston Villa

Pintsized

Good ebening! Unai Emery marches jumps ship from Champions League contenders, Villarreal, to the bright lights of Aston Villa. In a fitting 4-0 win over Brentford, Villa highlighted their ludicrous individual quality after sending Steven Gerrard packing. Newcastle sits handsomely at #4 and continues to impress with a relatively humble squad on paper – despite their megabucks backing.

Prediction: 1-1

Ryan

Is Newcastle’s journey to the top being fast tracked this season? They’re currently in the Top 4 and are looking very solid highlighted by an impressive victory at Spurs. In similarly impressive fashion, Villa actually gained a new manager bounce thrashing an astonished Brentford. With positivity now back in Birmingham, expect both teams to share the spoils.

Bournemouth vs Spurs

Pintsized

After a string of solid showings under Gary O’Neil, the wheels appear to have come off Bournemouth. Spurs too have hit a rough patch in the EPL and continentally, but the Cherries lack the weapons required to penetrate Spurs’ defensive wall. Expecting a big Son x Kane payday!

Prediction: 0-3

Ryan

After an electric honeymoon period, it looks like Bournemouth are back to where they were at the start of the season. Back to back losses will put doubts in the Cherries minds and hosting a Top 6 side will be a challenge. Granted this challenge is Spurs who are currently suffering from a slump in form, lowlighted by a home loss to Newcastle. However this is probably their best shot at getting back to winning ways and should fancy their chances.

Brighton vs Chelsea

Pintsized

Graham Potter’s homecoming comes a little earlier than expected. The tactical boffin carried the Seasiders for three years before upgrading to Chelsea. Roberto De Zerbi is still chasing his first victory, slowly realising that the squad he inherited is quite the bit-part mess. Chelsea is finding their teeth in front of the goal but still lack a complete striker.

Prediction: 0-2

Ryan

The Graham Potter derby arrives at the Amex. It’ll be interesting to hear the reaction the main man receives. His replacement maintains the same stylish football with no substance as the Seagulls struggle to score goals. Having said that, they probably didn’t expect much at the Etihad. Chelsea can feel somewhat fortunate to come away with a point against Man United and can’t afford a slow start here. Not an easy one to predict so the draw is probably the safest option.

Crystal Palace vs Southampton

Pintsized

I’m not sure anybody anticipated Everton to drop a 3-0 riot on Crystal Palace, but, hey ho. Southampton has, as usual, been hoovering scraps of points in the shadows. A win for either side will provide a huge distance in regard to relegation fears down the line. Sticking with Palace’s dynamic wingers to pierce Southampton.

Prediction: 1-0

Ryan

Confidence might be low at Selhurst Park after being spanked by an unfancied Everton outfit. It certainly won’t be low at St Mary’s where Southampton became just the second team in the league to take points from Arsenal. They’ll fancy their chances of continuing this momentum and might just follow through on this promise.

Prediction: 0-2

Steviano

Prediction: 2-1

Brentford vs Wolves

Pintsized

Wolves remain without a manager and any idea of how to get the ball into the opposition net. Amassing a paltry five goals over twelve games, Wolves are treading water until they can splash out in the January transfer market. The midlanders are still difficult to crack at the back, but the Ivan Toney hype is real.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

Worrying times for Wolves at the moment. Their low goal-scoring output is no surprise but their typically strong defensive core has been shattered to pieces, shipping 4 against fellow strugglers Leicester. Brentford are also suffering PTSD with 4 as that’s how many they conceded at Villa Park. You could argue that this was more of a freak result than the other one. This should be a low-scoring affair with the home advantage tipping the balance.

Prediction: 1-0

Steviano

Prediction: 3-1

Fulham vs Everton

Pintsized

Two wins on the bounce since the return of Aleksandr Mitrovic… coincidence? I think not! Marco Silva’s wildly open tactics leave Fulham as one of the ‘must-watch’ sides in the Premier League, hopefully enough to entice some bite out of Everton. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s return is massive for the Toffees – just how long can they keep their attacking talisman fit is the real question.

Prediction: 1-1

Ryan

It’s hard to believe but Fulham might actually be here to stay. The stars are l aligning with Marco Silva at the helm and Mitrovic’s freaky form. A big away win at Leeds keeps them ticking over with their next test against Everton. Another bottom-half team who scored a big victory against Palace. It’s close to call but the home side seem to be more consistent than the patchy away team.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

Prediction: 2-0

Liverpool vs Leeds United

Pintsized

Just when it looks like the pieces are falling back together for Liverpool, they go and drop a disastrous 1-0 to Forest. Leeds is spiralling out of control under Jesse Marsch, a far cry from the highly motivated outfit that avoided the jaws of relegation last season. Aside from peppering Bournemouth, Liverpool has been unusually lax in the final third compared to previous showings.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

An unusual time for a league match, thanks corrupt World Cup! This is an old-school clash pitting two teams against each other with lots of history. Liverpool were back to losing ways against Forest of all teams whilst Jesse Marsch might be next in line for his managerial P45. Losing at home to Fulham only fuels this fire. Liverpool seem to be struggling against lesser opposition and this should be the case against a team who play like they have nothing to lose. Superior quality should get the job done but it won’t be pretty.

Premier League Week 14
Sunday, 30 October 2022

Arsenal vs Notts Forest

Pintsized

Dropping two points to Southampton seemed poor for Arsenal before they received their spanking away at PSV. The Gunners remain seated on a 2-point gap at the top of the table, but questions will be raised over the ability of Arteta’s young squad to rebound from successive blows. Forest’s statement victory over Liverpool didn’t take them off the floor of the table, but there is a decent reason to believe that Steve Cooper could pull off an Italian Job-esque escape before January.

Prediction: 3-1

Ryan

Winning every game this season is not something Arsenal would have expected but dropping points against Southampton is disappointing. Their opponents shocked the world with a hard-fought unexpected 3 points against Liverpool. It’s difficult to see lightning strike twice though and Arsenal couldn’t have picked a better game to get back to winning ways.

Prediction: 3-0

Manchester United vs West Ham

Pintsized

The rivalry between Pintsized and Ryan has reached fever point. Ten Hag’s philosophy of ball retention and inverted full-backs is finally starting to produce a visible impact on Manchester United. Fitting Anthony Martial with robotic prosthetics or buying a true number 9 remains the clearest path to resolving United’s most glaring issues. The Soucek-Rice relationship is back firing on all cylinders, but the Hammers face similar headaches over finishing.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

This is a tasty fixture to round off the weekend. Two teams in good form should make for an interesting watch. Man United rescued a point at Chelsea although probably deserved more whilst West Ham were happy to make a victory against Bournemouth look routine. It feels like an important match for both teams with the World Cup looming. I’ll go with my heart and back the home team but this really does feel like a pick’em affair.
