Premier League Week 12: Predictions, Odds and Results

Premier League Week 12 Pintsized Background

Football… already? Premier League Week 12 returns earlier than usual as a knock-on effect of ‘ol Lizzie shuffling off this mortal coil. Nine of the ten postponed games from September are to be played mid-week, whilst Arsenal vs Manchester City has been postponed once again due to the Gunners’ commitments in the Europa League.

The pick of the matches involves a battle between two resurgent sides desperate to climb up the table. Liverpool received a major boost after stealing three points off a terrifying Manchester City XI, while Moyes appears to finally have figured out how to utilise his fresh wealth of talent.

Brighton vs Notts Forest

Pintsized

Mark the start of Brighton’s slippery descent down the table, post-Potter. Upgrades to Welbeck and Webster have to be key targets in January if the Gulls wish to keep their hopes alive in the top half of the table. Forest can be thankful that Leicester is exploding alongside them, but it is difficult to see just when such a disjointed side will finally gel together.

Prediction: 1-1

Ryan

The Seagulls have had a bit of a dip in form, partly thanks to their poor finishing and incompetence in front of goal. Brentford took full advantage but I’d be very surprised if Forest were able to replicate this feat. Rock bottom lost to fellow strugglers Wolves and things won’t get easier at the Amex.

Crystal Palace vs Wolves

Pintsized

While Vieira would have been aiming for three points over Leicester, the Frenchman will be happy with a return of 4 points in his last 2 games. Wolves are still finding their feet under the interim gaffer, Steve Davis, but could receive a big boost if/when Nuno Espirito returns to the helm. Questionable whether Wolves can threaten the scoreline.

Prediction: 1-0

Ryan

Battle of the mid? Crystal Palace settled for a point at Leicester whilst Wolves gained an important 3 points albeit against potentially doomed Forest. This has all the makings of a grinding, boring affair with nothing to write home about.

Bournemouth vs Southampton

Pintsized

Since the humiliating 9-0 drubbing to Liverpool, Bournemouth has not lost a single match in the Premier League. Even better, the two wins Bournemouth collected were against fellow relegation candidates (Forest and Leicester) – a massive return for the Cherries. Southampton managed to hold the Hammers to just a point, but truthfully, they could have conceded five goals on the day.

Prediction: 2-1

Ryan

All hail Gary O’Neill. He’s surely in line for Manager of the Month this October and an impressive unbeaten streak continued against Fulham. Southampton finally broke their own streak by fishing a point out of a tough encounter against the Hammers. The Saints have more quality but it’s hard to go against the home team in this southern derby.

Prediction: 2-0

Liverpool vs WEst Ham

Pintsized

Classic Klopp to break City’s magic spell yet still somehow insert his nastiest traits into the performance. At a time when abuse of officials is rife throughout every level of the game, it was a particularly tone-deaf reaction from one of the biggest faces in the sport. Although West Ham has reversed their early poor form, a lack of production in the final third is a consistent red flag.

Prediction: 3-1

Ryan

Just as we were writing Liverpool off this season, out they come to give City their first loss of the season. It may have been a counterattacking goal but 3 points is a massive plus for the home side. West Ham will provide a different type of test and are no pushovers with the character to comeback at any time as Southampton found out. This will be a close affair but an ultimately timely opportunity for Liverpool to kickstart their domestic campaign.

Brentford vs Chelsea

Pintsized

Where are the Potter haters now? Five wins on the trot across the EPL and Europe, conceding just one goal over that span. There’s a new dog in the title race. Brentford continues to fluctuate wildly from game to game, but an impressive 2-0 over Brighton proved their worth at the top level. Expecting a high scorer.

Prediction: 2-3

Ryan

This will be an entertaining one. Brentford are in good form after an impressive win against Brighton. Chelsea also took care of business at Villa Park but they rode their luck quite significantly. Ivan Toney will be relishing the opportunities Chelsea’s opponents had last time out and he should make a mark here.

Newcastle vs Everton

Pintsized

Despite a fast start at Old Trafford, Newcastle’s high-intensity press left itself vulnerable by the second half. Thankfully for the Geordies, Manchester United can’t buy themselves a goal at the moment. As expected, Everton lost immediately after snapping their unbeaten streak, a trend that will continue.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

Newcastle will be pleased with taking a point from Old Trafford. They’ll argue their first half deserved more but the second half was more about their defence and very dodgy officiating. Their opponents have had the wind knocked out of them with another loss against another Top 6 side. History should repeat itself and Newcastle should pick up a rare win.

Manchester United vs tottenham

Pintsized

If Fred had a right foot and Marcus Rashford could use his head, United would have enjoyed a comfortable-ish win at home on Sunday. Sleepy first-half performances, Antony’s lack of right foot, and a total inability to penetrate the centre leave the Red Devils perilous at #5. Spuds continue to ugly their way up the table, but as we saw with Conte at Inter in 2021, points are the Italian’s sole prerogative.

Prediction: 1-1

Ryan

Inconsistency and poor finishing? Sounds exactly like United. This came into play once again with dossers like Fred and Rashford missing sitters. Again the refs missed obvious penalty calls but that’s part and parcel of the shite they call officiating in England. Spurs are solid but unspectacular in their business and took care of Everton without breaking a sweat. A combination of poor finishing and Conte’s defensive mindset should make for a low scorer.

Fulham vs Aston Villa

Pintsized

The return of Mitrovic should see Fulham begin to compete once again. It’s never good to see a team so reliant upon one player, but hey, it’s a fun meme to watch whilst it lasts. All the talk surrounds Steven Gerrard and whether Mauricio Pochettino is ready to swoop in for the Villa job. Hardly surprising when the Midland outfit has secured just nine points this season.

Prediction: 3-1

Ryan

Fulham have lost a bit of their early season momentum with a draw against Bournemouth continuing this trend but at least they’re picking up important points. A team that desperately needs points is Aston Villa and although the loss against Chelsea was inevitable, the missed opportunities definitely gave Gerrard food for thought. If they become more efficient in front of goal, as they should with their quality, this should be a statement victory.

Leicester City vs Leeds United

Pintsized

Fingers crossed, this should be a belting bottom-of-the-table scrap. Both teams have been bleeding goals at the same rate as they bag. Brendan Rodgers may have stolen a point off Crystal Palace last time out, but the Foxes fanbase is starting to get agitated. Can Leicester save their gaffer’s neck?

Prediction: 2-2

Ryan

This match is what happens when you have two bags of all sorts. Two teams that are difficult to predict. Leicester didn’t lose to Palace but didn’t do much either whilst Leeds are all or nothing. The latter were outclassed by Arsenal but they always have a fighting chance. I tip the balance in their favour against a shaky Foxes defence.
