Premier League Predictions: Matchday 29
Saturday, 12 March

Brighton (#13, 33pts) vs Liverpool (#2, 63pts)

Pintsized

If Brighton end up slipping towards the bottom of the table near the close of the season, I want to ensure that the blame is placed directly on the board. Potter’s tactics have largely been spot-on throughout the season if only his defensive spine hadn’t been so rudely ripped apart in January. Liverpool proved they could dig deep against West Ham, yet I fear this could be a far higher-scoring game.

Prediction: 1-3

Ryan

What could have been a difficult fixture earlier this season is now arguably the best time for Liverpool to travel to the Seagulls following the home side’s less than stellar recent form. Previous ambitions of European football have now been converted into hopes of a top-half finish. Those hopes should continue to disappear with this match.

Prediction: 0-3

Steviano

Brighton don’t score many and Liverpool don’t concede many so difficult to see anything other than a continuing Liverpool win here.

Prediction: 0-2

Brentford (#15, 27pts) vs Burnley (#18, 21pts)

Pintsized

Ivan Toney is once again in lightning form, bagging six goals in his last five games. Against Championship-calibre squads, Toney is a FREAK, while not being too shabby against the bigger boys too. Dyche continues to perform wonders with his comically weak side, but a growing injury list emerges at an awkward time.

Prediction: 1-1

Ryan

Another week, another relegation 6 pointer. The reverse fixture at Turf Moor was probably the start of Brentford’s dip in the table to the point where they are not guaranteed top flight safety at the first time of asking. Uneven form on both sides makes it difficult to predict this one so I’ll plump for a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Steviano

A proper 6-pointer of a game with a win for Burnley taking them out of the bottom three and above Leeds and Everton and only 3 points behind Brentford who finally managed to break their losing streak away at Norwich last weekend.  I could argue all the results here but Brentford may benefit from a Tony hot-streak after his return.

Prediction: 2-1

Man United (#5, 47pts) vs Tottenham (#7, 45pts)

Pintsized

After a thoroughly embarrassing derby, the same media circus has followed United. Blaming the manager, player quality, player morale and everything in between – every man and their dog have an opinion on where United continue to go wrong. Best not to forget that Rangnick at the helm is only for the interim, with a lot of deadwood sure to be shipped off in the summer. Spuds’ attack may appear to be back in deadly form, but Everton and Leeds are expected to offer close to double digits conceded.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

Battle of the dossers? Two teams with two unhappy and uninterested sets of fans. A 4-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals City doesn’t even feel embarrassing anymore which shows what the last few years damage have done to the club. Yes a 5-0 win for Spurs is a nice confidence booster but this was also against a free-falling Everton. It doesn’t mean that they’re a good side. This one will be a low-scoring affair but maybe stupidly, I will go with a home win.

Prediction: 1-0

Steviano

Spurs may have scored nine goals in their last two games but United’s defence is not as porous as Leeds and Everton particularly if Varane returns as expected.  United competed for an hour at City last weekend before eventually downing tools in a pitiful last half hour which reflected the perceived lack of togetherness in the squad.   Both teams have serious issues but United should be stung into a response for this one.

Chelsea (#3, 56pts) vs Newcastle (#14, 31pts)

Pintsized

Prediction:

Ryan

Whilst Chelsea’s off-field shenanigans are quite a distraction, their on-field actions remain solid and in-line with where they will likely finish this season. They had it somewhat easy against Norwich mid-week but fellow lower-half merchants Newcastle will provide a sterner test. The Magpies have flown out of the relegation zone and look safe for another season in the Premier League. Despite the away side’s strong form, this should be a step too far even with the surrounding pantomime at Stamford Bridge.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

Newcastle are coming off the back of a run of top-4 form albeit against bottom half teams and face a Chelsea team missing Chilwell and James again which hampers their game plan.  In off-field terms this feels like the darker side v the dark side as their respective ownerships have made the main headlines over the last few months and weeks for Chelsea.  In football terms if should be a reality check for Newcastle but provide a benchmark for where they aim to be soon.

Leeds (#16, 23pts) vs Norwich (#20, 17pts)

Pintsized

Prediction:

Ryan

The gods seem to have blessed us with two relegation 6 pointers this weekend – how exciting. Well not for the respective teams’ fans. Earlier this season, we wondered if second season syndrome would strike and it looks like Leeds are the latest victims of this. A change of manager hasn’t changed their woeful form as they continue to take L after L. Speaking of teams with consistent L’s, Norwich arrive hoping to claw desperately for points to avoid their inevitable fate. Whilst this could happen, I see this as the best opportunity for Jesse Marsch to get his first points on the board.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

If ever a game is going to kick start a season save it’s this one as Norwich’s mini revival under Dean Smith crashed and burned a long time ago. Leeds injury woes finally seem to be abating although Phillips remains a big loss but with attacking options returning  Marsch will be looking for a statement performance here.

Prediction: 4-0

Everton (#17, 22pts) vs Wolves (#8, 43pts)

Pintsized

Prediction:

Ryan

What has happened to Everton? It was only last season when Carlo Ancelotti and a fresh set of players gave the Toffees some excitement and ambition for the future. Fast forward to today and they’re dragged into a relegation scrap with Fat Frank at the helm. The opposite of a glow-up. Wolves however look like they know how to transform with a different manager and style. They boast an unbelievable defensive record with only a lack of attacking prowess preventing them from mounting an unlikely title charge. As it stands, Wolves will be delighted with where they are and will continue to roll towards European football with a solid win here.

Prediction: 0-2

Steviano

Oh dear – could we really be seeing the top flights longest serving team finally drop down a division – a 5-0 hammering at Spurs and no goals in 3 games does not bode well and it seems to me that the battle to avoid the third relegation spot is between Everton, Leeds and Burnley.   Wolves halted a run of losses last time out and will capitalise on Everton’s lack of confidence.

Prediction: 0-2

West Ham (#6, 45pts) vs Aston Villa (#9, 36pts)

Pintsized

Prediction:

Ryan

West Ham are still in the mix for European football even with some recent inconsistency. Good results against strong teams follow poor results against weaker teams. Aston Villa seem to have steadied their own ship with a couple of big consecutive wins. This is one of those matches that could fall under the ‘what if’ category for the Hammers and that’s why I’ll go for a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Steviano

Villa are comfortable now and appear to have given Coutinho the platform to show what a quality player he is (although never a £100m+ player for me) which is helping lift his team mates.  The Hammers have more at stake and are still eyeing the top 6 spot and Europe but Villa’s relative “freedom” to play will suit them in this one.

Southampton (#10, 35pts) vs Watford (#19, 19pts)

Pintsized

Prediction:

Ryan

The Saints have not been marching in recently, more stumbled their way through some disappointing losses in the last few weeks. They couldn’t have picked a better match to get back to winning ways though in the shape of a doomed Watford. A 4-0 loss to Wolves adds to the misery of the Hornets who look to be the latest team to fall into the ‘yo-yo’ category. A Southampton win will be more evidence of this.

Prediction: 2-0

Steviano

Southampton generally do a good job of beating the teams below them and this shouldn’t be an exception.  Watford will be more organised under Roy but lack the quality for the fight and have key injuries to players like Sarr.

Prediction: 2-0

Arsenal (#4, 48pts) vs Leicester (#12, 33pts)

Pintsized

Prediction:

Ryan

This is an interesting one. Arsenal are far from convincing overall but at times, they do play some good football and are in contention for unlikely Top 4. Leicester seem reinvigorated with the return of Jamie Vardy which surely outlines where their transfer activity should lie this summer. Nonetheless, this could be a good game to watch and close out Sunday’s string of matches. I’ll go for an Arsenal win here but not with much certainty.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

I’m not sure if Brendan Rogers is focused on the Europa Conference League (does anyone understand it or care?) or whether he would prefer to stop the season now as they are destined for mid-table obscurity.  Rogers has had an injury list all season that was more Holby City than Leicester City and thankfully the board have recognised that and not jettisoned him.  Kudos to Arteta and Arsenal’s board as well for not panicking and seeing that Arteta had a clear strategy for the team which included some tough choices.

Crystal Palace (#11, 33pts) vs Man City (#1, 69pts)

Pintsized

Prediction:

Ryan

The Eagles are not necessarily soaring but rather floating in mid-table purgatory although I’m sure that will delight Patrick Vieira in his first big managerial task. The City winning train continues to operate and a derby win cements that. Their first two goals were somewhat lucky but the next couple were created purely from skill and class. City will want revenge for the unlikely loss at the hands of Palace earlier this season and this seems like the opportune time for the same 2-0 victory for the away team.

Prediction: 0-2

Steviano

Palace have upset City a few times in recent years including at the Etihad this season.  City will be without Dias and Ake which means relying on Stones and Laporte who have both had their “moments” – Palace’s pace will trouble them but it will be a case of City needing to be on the front foot to minimise the defensive exposure.

Prediction: 1-3
