A mid-week Matchday? Thank you, corporate overlords. Perhaps I’d feel less short-changed if the matches to kick off the footballing week didn’t involve the teams in the gutter. Alas, wrap up warm, put the new COVID restrictions to the back of your mind, and get down to watching some soccerball.

Premier League Matchday 14: Tuesday, 30 November

Newcastle (#20, 6pts) vs Norwich (#19, 9pts)

Pintsized

Could this battle end up being decided by the stronger managerial replacement? Dean Smith has made an instant impact at the Canaries, albeit carrying on Farke’s last dying effort to secure a win. Tim Krul is starting to fall into the form of his life, while Hanley and Gibson are incorporating a bit of much-needed menace to their tackles. Howe was unlucky to drop the win against Brentford, but the Geordies were ragged against Arsenal. In perhaps the most winnable match for the North-Easterners at St James’ Park, they need to go balls to the walls.

Prediction: 3-1

Ryan

Guess who’s back? Back again? Premiership fixtures… wait what? You know it’s nearly Christmas time when the fixture list crams up big time. Let’s start with a relegation 6 pointer. Newcastle coming off a dour loss to Arsenal whilst Norwich positively snored their way to a draw against Wolves. Although Dean Smith seems to have organised the Canaries, Newcastle still have that bit of magic in Allan Saint-Maximim who could give any defender nightmares. That’s why I’m going for Newcastle to finally break their duck and claim a first victory of the season.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

Newcastle’s main issue is their inability to keep goals out as ironically they have scored the same number of goals as Arsenal so the loss of Lascelles through suspension is not great for them.  I do expect Howe to take an attacking approach in this one and get the first Toon win of the season to dent Dean Smith’s canaries revival.

Prediction: 3-2

Leeds (#17, 12pts) vs Crystal Palace (#11, 16pts)

Pintsized

The loss of Patrick Bamford has hurt Leeds far more than previously expected. A functioning replacement has to be sourced in January, Dan James hasn’t been able to drive at defences as the lone forward. Although the squad quality is similar, Vieira is milking the ever-loving life out of his parts. Moulding Benteke back into a physical nuisance has helped Palace create space for Gallagher, Zaha and Edouard to thrive.

Prediction: 2-2

Ryan

Leeds are definitely not as effective as they were last season, perhaps lacking the surprise element this time with a 0-0 draw at Brighton proving the point. Vieira’s Palace lost a close affair to Gerrard’s Villa and will look to bounce back from a disappointing home loss. This feels like a score draw affair so that’s what I’ll go for.

Prediction: 1-1

Steviano

Leeds are slowly beginning to gather some form again as their injury list recedes but face a Palace team still in relatively good form despite the loss at home to Villa.  Entertaining draw for me.

Premier League Matchday 14: Wednesday, 1 December

Southampton (#15, 14pts) vs Leicester (#10, 18pts)

Pintsized

A showdown between consistency and inconsistency. Southampton have been quietly accumulating points in the shadows, with James Ward-Prowse, in particular, putting in performances worthy of an England call-up. Brendan Rodgers has suffered from a long injury list, but the Foxes are impossible to predict this season. Vardy is blowing hot and cold while Ademola Lookman and Harvey Barnes aren’t the names Rodgers would first jot on the team sheet.

Prediction: 1-2

Ryan

As predicted, Southampton were blown apart at Anfield without a hope or prayer. Also as predicted, Leicester blew apart Watford to return to winning ways. It seems like things will stay the same and both teams will continue their current trends in this match.

Prediction: 1-3

Steviano

Defensive injuries are still hampering Leicester but they remain a goalscoring threat which may tip the balance against an uninspiring Saints team.

Prediction: 1-2

Wolves (#6, 20pts) vs Burnley (#18, 9pts)

Pintsized

Just when it is time to fear Wolves, they go and draw against Norwich. Wolves consistently create chances but their execution in the final third has been awful. 12 goals are not acceptable for a team that hosts Raul Jiminez, Hee-Chan Hwang, Pedro Neto and Adama Traore. Dyche is doing Dyche things, grinding out draws to drag other teams down with Burnley and preparing for an inevitable relegation battle. If they can keep Maxwel Cornet fit, the Ivory Coast man can always squeeze a goal.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

Whoever bets on a 4-4 draw here deserves their fortunes should we somehow see a bunch of flying pigs outside of Molineux. The home team bored their way to a point at Norwich whilst the snow spared everyone a potential snoozer between Burnley and Spurs. This is one that will surely only excite fans of both clubs and that’s really stretching things. Wolves have that extra quality so I’ll tip the balance in their favour.

Prediction: 1-0

Steviano

Wolves have a long injury list which will hamper them although they sit in the giddy heights of 6th they are facing a Burnley team unbeaten in their last 4 outings and starting to demonstrate that Sean Dyche grit again.

Prediction: 1-1

Watford (#16, 13pts) vs Chelsea (#1, 30pts)

Pintsized

The Hornet’s are blasted with injuries, so much so that Ashley Fletcher will be tasked with breaking apart a staunch Chelsea defence. Forgoing any mental mishaps, e.g. a red card, Chelsea are far too coordinated to let these sort of matches slip. Jorginho will also want to spite the voters after coming a measly third in the Ballon d’Or.

Prediction: 0-3

Ryan

Surprise surprise, a ‘cup final’ against United spent all of Watford’s energy aside for the following game as they were easily tossed aside by Leicester. Speaking of United, Chelsea somehow managed to fail to take advantage of their opponent’s negative demeanour and scrambled a draw through a stupid penalty. Against a Watford side that should be a bit more willing to attack, this will be an easier time for Chelsea to get back to winning ways.

Prediction: 0-3

Steviano

I have no idea what to make of Watford under Ranieri but their huge injury list and Chelsea’s miserly defence makes this the unlikeliest of games to win against his old team.

Prediction: 1-4

West Ham (#4, 23pts) vs Brighton (#9, 18pts)

Pintsized

Losing Ogbonna has stung, leaving the Hammers dropping points in important matches. The attacking output is still firing on all cylinders, however, and as long as the Hammers march on in Europe – there is always the outlet of Champions League through winning the Europa. Brighton fans booing a draw is peak football fan mentality. I’m not sure anyone else could produce what Potter has with the current Brighton squad. Expecting West Ham to just about out-score Brighton with the Seagulls wasting chances in front of goal.

Prediction: 3-2

Ryan

West Ham were rather unlucky away at City and have proven to be long-term contenders for Europe this season. Brighton’s early charge though has stumbled recently with a 0-0 draw against Leeds highlighting this fade away from positivity. This should continue and West Ham can pick up where they left off.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

A narrow loss at Man City shouldn’t dent the Hammer’s confidence as they take on a Brighton team booed off the pitch by their own fans at the weekend (seriously guys you are in 9th place and a win off a Europa league place!).  That said I expect West Ham to end their losing streak in this one.

Prediction: 2-0

Everton (#14, 15pts) vs Liverpool (#3, 28pts)

Pintsized

A Merseyside derby with almost no fanfare at all. Everton are ravaged with injuries, with the return of Richarlison potential the only shining light. The snake, Fabian Delph, isn’t doing the job that Rafa desires. Liverpool remain a fearsome beast and are still on a warpath after the shock against West Ham. Michael Keane ain’t the dude to stop Mohammad Salah from scoring.

Prediction: 0-3

Ryan

The Merseyside derby is a staple of the Premiership season and things will be even frostier in this winter matchup. Everton are really struggling with injuries as the loss at Brentford showed but their noisy neighbours are proving quite the opposite with another big victory against Southampton shoving Liverpool right up there. Normally derbies are difficult to predict with form thrown out of the window but to be honest, this might be one of the easier ones in recent memory. More pressure to be placed on Rafa.

Prediction: 0-3

Steviano

No Calvert-Lewin still and Richarlison suspended does not bode well for the Toffees with early season converts starting to turn on Rafa.  The reds have 17 goals in their last 5 games and I expect them to keep their average up in this one.

Prediction: 0-3

Aston Villa (#13, 16pts) vs Man City (#2, 29pts)

Pintsized

Could Stevie G have lucked out any harder? Dean Smith was unfairly booted after suffering a horror injury list, while Gerrard picked up a rebounding team. Villa haven’t transformed overnight, they have always had a strong squad. With all that said, City are only growing with every match. Stopping Palace and Brighton is different to holding the front against the likes of Rodri, Mahrez and Sterling.

Prediction: 1-2

Ryan

Steven Gerrard seems to be getting the best out of his Villainous bunch with an impressive consecutive win away against Palace. The snowy weather may have disrupted their game but City’s football proved too hot to handle in the end for West Ham in a close fought victory. Despite an upturn in form for the home team, City’s eventual victory will prove to be anything but close fought here.

Prediction: 1-4

Steviano

Hmm not as easy to predict as I would hope this one.  City are missing Grealish, De Bruyne and Foden but Sterling, Mahrez and Gundogan picking up the slack which helps but they face a Villa team with new found confidence under Stevie G.  Narrow City win but a draw wouldn’t surprise me.

Prediction: 1-3

Spurs (#7, 19pts) vs Brentford (#12, 16pts)

Pintsized

Perhaps the postponing of Spurs/Burnley will have allowed Conte to kick the ego out of his underperforming squad. A proper week of rest, especially after European travelling, will do Spurs a world of good. Brentford have repaired most of the cracks in their defence from October, but scoring is still an issue against stronger defences. Spurs to sneak this.

Prediction: 1-0

Ryan

Aside from being saved from a potential stinker of a match, Spurs are now the recipients of an extra days rest against their opponents Brentford who found themselves back to winning ways against a depleted Everton. The Bees have been very unpredictable for all the right reasons whilst Spurs have been the exact same for all the wrong reasons. As a result, I’ll go with an entertaining draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Steviano

The Bees managed to stop the rot in the last 2 games but face a Spurs team who are getting to know Conte and I expect that he will get enough out of them for this one.

Prediction: 2-0

Man United (#8, 18pts) vs Arsenal (#5, 23pts)

Pintsized

United fans worldwide have been scrambling to consume every piece of Ralf Rangnick media to swear they have received the second coming of football Jesus. The German is an improvement on the caretaker, Michael Carrick, and is of the calibre to manage the size of the club at least until the end of the season. While he won’t be in charge against Arsenal, his influence will surely already be in effect. Arteta has been incredibly lucky to beat teams during periods of downturn. An inflated league position will equal out over the season.

Prediction: 1-0

Ryan

Carrick-ball may be coming to an end soon but a smash and grab point against league leaders Chelsea was definitely more than the United faithful expected. Jadon Sancho’s recent form will please and excite fans of the home side but less so for the away team. Arsenal strolled to a 2-0 win against Newcastle but their side are exciting and inconsistent at the same time. Recently Arsenal have had an annoyingly good streak over United but with the arrival of Ralf Rangnick, it’s about time for that to end.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

With the temporary interim manager replaced by the semi-permanent interim manager it will be interesting to see what magic Herr Ralf can produce in a couple of days.  Missing Varane and Maguire is an issue for an already leaky defence but Arsenal are not a free scoring team and I think the new manager bounce will be enough for a draw at least.

Prediction: 1-1
