Premier League Week 2
Saturday, 13 August 2022
Aston Villa vs Everton
Pintsized
Not the start to the season that either midfielder-turned-manager would have desired. Lampard, in the midst of Everton’s looming financial hellscape, has managed to squeak through Conor Coady and Amadou Onana. Gerrard’s time is ticking at Villa, so far failing to merge a team from his pick’n’mix assortment of quality players. Jacob Ramsey remains a real bright spark for the Villans – a man destined to represent the Three Lions.
Prediction: 1-1
Ryan
One thing is for certain from this match, someone’s 0 has to go. Both teams started off their season in the worst way possible with losses to Bournemouth and Chelsea respectively. The former is more unacceptable than the latter. Gerrard vs Lampard off the pitch will be less inspiring than their battles on the pitch for this one. Toothless attacks meet fairly solid defences and this should result in a draw.
Prediction: 1-1
Steviano
Everton have made a shrewd loan signing in Conor Coady which should make a difference to their defence going forward – splashing the cash on Onana is more of an unknown. Villa will want to put their dreadful opening game behind them and should come through this one due to their better attacking options.
Prediction: 2-1

Southampton vs Leeds United
Pintsized
A team of James Ward-Prowse and not much else. Lowering the average age at St Mary’s Stadium will benefit the team in the long run, but this will be a painful teething season. Leeds showed a Bielsa-style grit to counter Wolves and snatch a victory. Raphinha, who? Jack Harrison was exceptional on the left wing, consistently the mastermind behind threatening attacks.
Prediction: 1-1
Ryan
Another difficult one to predict despite last week’s opposing fortunes. Southampton have to improve following their 4-1 drubbing against Spurs whilst Leeds managed to grab an impressive win over Wolves. However we know that both of these teams can be very unpredictable every week and it would be difficult to bet against the draw.
Prediction: 2-2
Steviano
Southampton were mauled at Spurs in the opener and prompted early season calls for Hasenhüttl’s head which is unlikely given his track record of recovering from seemingly career ending defeats. They will need to massively up their game as they face a Leeds who got off to a surprise start by beating Wolves who I’ll back for a surprise win again.
Prediction: 1-2

Arsenal vs Leicester City
Pintsized
An opening game victory over Crystal Palace has Gunner fans believing it is their year. To be fair to Arteta, he has implemented his vision onto the current squad – but time will tell if the BTEC Pep is outed as a fraud. Leicester will deeply struggle if they fail to recruit any fresh blood over the summer window. If they lose James Maddison to Newcastle, relegation worries could start to spring.
Prediction: 2-1
Ryan
In previous years, this encounter has always been an interesting one providing some good entertainment and drama. Arsenal kicked off the Premier League season with a big win at Palace but Leicester will be disappointed letting 3 points go against a determined Brentford.
If the away team had strengthened, I would predict a good season for them but they seem to be content letting their big assets go without replacements which is worrying. Arsenal are at the opposite end of the spectrum and that should prove too much for the Foxes to handle.
Prediction: 3-1
Steviano
Leicester’s top players are all linked with moves away but only Kasper has gone so far – the total lack of incomings is still a mystery as even the top 2 teams recognise the need to refresh the dressing room each year. Arsenal’s rebuild meanwhile got off to a strong start at Palace and they should bring that form into this game.
Prediction: 2-0

Brighton vs Newcastle
Pintsized
Last year, Brentford were the hipster’s preferred flavour. Has Graham Potter’s diamond-ball created a new craze? Any manager that can get Danny Welbeck firing on all cylinders deserves credit. Joelinton’s revival in the midfield, alongside the disgustingly underrated Bruno Guimaraes, could carry Newcastle to Europa spots.
Prediction: 1-2
Ryan
I normally say playing against Man United is like a cup final for teams and then they drop their levels in the next game. These days it’s more like a third round tie and Brighton were fully deserving winners last week. Newcastle also blasted off against an out of sorts Forest. It’s a difficult one to call but I’ll go for a home win.
Prediction: 2-1
Steviano
Asset stripping at Brighton again didn’t seem to impact them away to United last week although it probably says more about the home team than Albion. Newcastle will provide sterner opposition as Eddie Howe has established a settled team quickly and impressively and not got carried away with cheque book fever – this is the sort of game the Toon need to win if they want to break into the European places this season.
Prediction: 1-2

Man City vs Bournemouth
Pintsized
A demolition job is imminent. Bournemouth returned to the Premier League in style. Marcus Tavernier made good on his transfer with a stellar performance that saw the twenty-three-year-old dance around the final third. The beast that is Haaland, however, has awoken. Good luck defending against that freak of nature.
Prediction: 4-0
Ryan
The home team look just as strong as last year and with the addition of Haaland up top, will give defences further nightmares. Bournemouth started off perfectly with a somewhat unexpected win against Villa performing beyond their means. They should give every game a good go this season but the Premiership is a big step up from the competitive Championship and this game will be a big example of that.
Prediction: 4-0
Steviano
City appear to have addressed the immediate short term left back cover problem with a cheaper Spaniard option than Chelsea’s – potentially another one to follow and the last gaps in the squad are completed. The only other transfer business for City may be driven by the bonkers Barcelona transfer policy with a crazy offer for Bernardo. Bournemouth got off to a great start against Villa but this should be a reality check for them.
Prediction: 4-0

Wolves vs Fulham
Pintsized
Uh oh. Turns out that failing to bolster a barren attack will come back to bite you. Wolves aren’t a pretty team to watch, but they will prove exceptionally difficult to break down over the course of the season. Fulham put up an inspiring fight against Liverpool to leave with a point, but their reliance on Aleksandar Mitrovic remains a worrying red flag.
Prediction: 1-0
Ryan
Why does this have draw written all over it? Wolves will be disappointed losing to Leeds but Fulham will still be absolutely buzzing with their performance against a strong Liverpool team, managing a point but perhaps deserving of more. Their confidence should be rocking but Wolves will be looking for a bounce back performance in front of their faithful. Both teams will be happy with a point.
Prediction: 1-1
Steviano
Ok I don’t think I was alone in expecting Fulham to be lambs to the slaughter against Liverpool last week however they battled hard and were (just about) value for the draw against a surprisingly lacklustre Reds. They will face a Wolves team smarting from defeat who should bounce back in this one although I’m mystified by them letting Coady go on loan to Everton?
Prediction: 2-1

Brentford vs Manchester United
Pintsized
For all of United’s woes last season, they managed to complete the double-over Brentford. Thomas Frank wasn’t a happy chappy after Brentford’s 3-1 loss at home – arguing his side “smashed them”, lol. Ten Hag will be desperate to win the fans back immediately, which has to start with dropping McTominay.
Prediction: 0-2
Ryan
The Bees are looking to avoid second season syndrome and their comeback against Leicester highlights their strong character and determination to punch above their weight. Their next opponents are the antithesis of that description – disappointed but not surprised springs to mind.
I’m writing a big rant piece on the failings at Old Trafford so I’ll sum up by saying that o don’t trust this squad at all. The most unlikeable bunch of toe rags to wear the once proud red shirt. They’re not going to change and Brentford will take advantage of the shambles.
Prediction: 2-1
Steviano
Brentford fans were hoping to see Erickson cleaning up at the Gtech Stadium this season but not in the opposition. A solid start away at Brentford showing togetherness coming back from 2-0 down and a scoring start for Toney is a stark contrast to United’s home defeat to Brighton amid Glazer protests outside and boo-boys inside. Ten Hag is acutely aware of the issues now and desperately needs board backing to develop the style of play he demands – good luck!
Prediction: 2-1

Premier League Week 2

Nottingham Forest vs West Ham
Pintsized
Gleefully watching Lingard fail on his debut was the most that a Hammer could hope for last weekend. J-Lingz is almost a guaranteed bet to run riot against the club that he teased for the past two years. Moyes bringing in Maxwel Cornet is a masterclass, though.
Prediction: 1-3
Ryan
Forest have had a somewhat tough start to their season with their schedule but again highlights the difference between Premiership and Championship. This weekend doesn’t get any easier for them as they play a Hammers side who are looking for their first points of the season. There’s no shame in losing to the reigning champions and the antidote to that will be to put a newly promoted side to the sword.
Prediction: 0-2
Steviano
Both teams started off with predictable defeats although the Hammers showed plenty of character against City and are continuing to strengthen their team with smart acquisitions. A good display for Forest against one of the better Premier teams would be a big statement for what can only be survival hopes – I don’t see that being the case however and I expect a comfortable Hammering.
Prediction: 1-3

Chelsea vs Tottenham
Pintsized
Match of the weekend by far. Chelsea was lucky to leave Goodison Park with a point in a staggeringly dull affair. Spurs will punish Chelsea on the counter with far greater gusto than Lampard’s Toffees. Every strong Tottenham performance, however, is followed by a disaster class – it’s one of the simple realities of life.
Prediction: 2-1
Ryan
The first Top 6 clash of the season with a London derby of sorts. Both teams started with an expected win although the away side were far more convincing than the home side last weekend. Despite this, form goes out of the window in these games and I imagine this will be a nervy affair especially at the start of the season with expectations at a high. For some reason, I see this being a bore draw.
Prediction: 0-0
Steviano
This should be a cracker of a game – Chelsea are rebuilding their defence whilst Conte is strengthening all over the pitch and I’m expecting plenty of goals despite Chelsea offloading a pair of £150m strikers. Spurs to outscore Chelsea in this one with the more potent attack.
Prediction: 2-3

Premier League Week 2

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace
Pintsized
Nobody expected the early sucker punch from Fulham, yet Klopp’s men can never be considered out of the race after last season’s ‘so nearly’ heroics. Salah continues to reign king of the FPL, while it’s difficult to imagine Jeffrey Schlupp or Cheick Doucoure handling Liverpool’s well-oiled midfield.
Prediction: 3-0
Ryan
A disappointing start for Liverpool who had to unexpectedly rescue a point at Craven Cottage with a below par performance to begin their campaign. The best time to drop points though is now so that’ll be the mindset there, aside from Klopp’s usual salty excuses of the pitch not being great. Palace failed to put any points on the board in their first game but they showed flashes of what they’re capable of doing this season. This could be game of the weekend with two teams willing to attack and excite the crowd. With this in mind, the home team has that superior quality which will make the difference on Monday.
Prediction: 3-2
Steviano
Arsenal at home and Liverpool away has done no favours for Viera who will likely find his team pointless after two matches – the poor display at Fulham will not be tolerated by Klopp and I expect a real backlash at Anfield in this one.
Prediction: 4-1
