Premier League Predictions: Matchday 37
Sunday, 15 May

Tottenham vs Burnley

Tottenham (#5, 62PTS) vs Burnley (#17, 34PTS)

Pintsized

As the season pulls closer to its final station, it’s time to sprinkle some respect on Antonio Conte’s time at Spurs. The Italian has instilled a shape to an out-of-sorts Spuds that looked doomed to mid-table obscurity at the start of the season. Aside from a spanking to Villa, Burnley had shipped just one goal in their past three games. Luck has played a big part in proceedings, but the gamble in sacking Dyche seems to have given a fresh lease of life to the underdogs.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

This match has classic Spursy written all over it. They can come out and match the likes of City and Liverpool but always seem to fail against lesser teams. Both home and away side are playing for something this season in the form of Top 4 and PL survival respectively. That’s why I see Spurs slipping up to a fired up, desperate Clarets side.

Prediction: 1-1

Steviano

Burnley have had a revival of late but it may still be too late.  Spurs are unpredictable to say the least but they will want to end on a high and may still be chasing top 4 subject to this week’s London derby.

Prediction: 3-0

Wolves vs Norwich City

Wolves (#8, 50PTS) vs Norwich (#20, 21PTS)

Pintsized

If you’re gonna ship a shedload of goals, at least it was against whisper the eventual league champions. Bruno Lage may have struggled to create a consistent threat in the final third, but the Portuguese manager’s first year has been a strong showing. Dean Smith will likely have Norwich back up in a couple of years, only for the Canaries to ship three figure goals.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

Dead rubber much? Wolves are too far away from European football and Norwich are looking ahead to living up to their pathetic ‘yo-yo’ status in the Championship next season. I have no time for these types of clubs, they’re just a waste of a fresh Premiership match up. Anyways, Wolves should bounce back after being put down by a focused City.

Prediction: 2-0

Steviano

Wolves appear to have started their summer vacation somewhat early without a win in five which see them drop put of European contention – that said Norwich are just awful without a goal in four games and a dreadful defence.

Prediction: 3-0

West Ham vs Manchester City

West Ham (#7, 55PTS) vs Man City (#1, 86PTS)

Pintsized

Despite both sides European dreams being well and truly over, only the away side has anything to play for. Liverpool continues to heap pressure on City at the top of the table, while Moyes would be better off dropping points to avoid the humiliation of the Europa Conference League. Both sides have thin squads, yet only one has £100m impact subs on the bench.

Prediction: 1-3

Ryan

Two clubs coming off disappointing endings to their European campaigns although the former should be very proud of their efforts. They have a realistic shot of making it back into the Europa League next season given the team above them is an embarrassment. Whilst this could be a close game, the experience and professional nature of Man City in tight title races will show through here.

Prediction: 1-2

Steviano

There could be a lot of goals in this one as City’s absence of 5 defenders leaves them with potentially one semi-fit centre half so they will need to ensure their attack has as much of the ball as possible.

Prediction: 2-2

Watford vs Leicester City

Watford (#19, 22PTS) vs Leicester City (#14, 42PTS)

Pintsized

I cannot stop laughing at the fact that Roy was partying with the Palace players after they had relegated Watford. The size of the cajones on a man who has no f**ks left to give. Rodgers has suffered a nightmare season with dressing room troubles, a steady injury list and a lifeless attack. Leicester will do well to steady the storm and allow the Scotsman to rebuild in the 22/23 season, this year has felt more like a hiccup than a long-standing issue.

Prediction: 0-1

Ryan

Another dead rubber although that is somewhat to be expected at this time of the season when most things are wrapped up. The fact that Leicester have underachieved this season shows how far they’ve come. With a fresh squad and no injuries, they should be back. One team that won’t be up for it is Watford. I might as well copy and paste what I said about Norwich here for the Hornets because they’re essentially the same outside of their location. Leicester to win and try to end their season on a high.

Prediction: 0-3

Steviano

What was the point of appointing Roy Hodgson to the end of the season – they were already doomed so why not long to the future – the Hornets to get nothing from this one.

Leeds United vs Brighton

Leeds United (#18, 34PTS) vs Brighton (#9, 47PTS)

Pintsized

After a bright start under Jesse Marsch, Leeds has managed to self implode. Stuart Dallas self-injuring himself off a suicidal tackle, Luke Ayling & Dan James fancying an early summer holiday and Raphina going AWOL have all contributed to the Yorkshire pride’s demise. Potter’s 4-0 dismantling of United will forever be etched in the Seagulls’ annals, but at this point, there’s a handful of Championship teams that could run a similar figure against the pitiful Mancunians.

Prediction: 0-2

Ryan

As a beleaguered United fan, it gives me a little bit of pleasure to see Leeds in a relegation scrap. Second season syndrome has really been present here and they’re starting to show their dirty nature, racking up the most bookings in a PL season and more recently several reds. One more reason for being a depressed United fan is the latest trouncing at Brighton who were up for it and on fire. This is a really good opportunity for them to carry on and I think they’ll relish proving to the doubters that it wasn’t a one-off result against a bad United team.

Prediction: 0-2

Steviano

City, Arsenal and Chelsea was not the end of season run of games Leeds needed and they have slipped in to the bottom 3 accordingly.  Two sendings off in two matches did little for them and adds to a continuously long injury list that said I can see this being an upset with a spirited last chance saloon performance,

Aston Villa vs Crystal Palace

Aston Villa (#11, 44PTS) vs Crystal Palace (#10, 44PTS)

Pintsized

Nice of Gerrard to finally squeeze some performance out of the riches of talent he possesses at Villa. Two new managers with vastly differing squads in ability – you have to wonder where Villa may have reached under the guidance of Patrice Vieira. Palace is crawling over the finish line with zero glory, potential for a goal fest in a nothing match for either side.

Prediction: 3-2

Ryan

More lower half dead rubber fodder here. At least both teams can let loose and give fans an entertaining game. Villa were unlucky against Liverpool and Gerrard didn’t let his former team off that easily whilst Palace sealed Watford’s umpteenth exit from the top flight. With nothing on the line, I’ll go for an entertaining draw.

Prediction: 2-2

Steviano

Definition of a mid-table end of season game – Villa will be buoyed with making Coutinho’s move permanent and might have too much for Palace.

Prediction: 3-2

Everton vs Brentford

Everton (#16, 35PTS) vs Brentford (#12, 43PTS)

Pintsized

A Leeds late season capitulation alongside a couple of gutsy Toffee performances have allowed the Scouse outfit to breathe a sigh of relief. Prime Iwobihnio under Lampard has also delivered a healthy dose of memes during the extended relegation scrap. Brentford bravely steadied the ship after an awful start to 2022 and is shaping up once again as a force to be reckoned with.

Prediction: 2-2

Ryan

If you’d told me at the start of the season that this fixture could be pivotal in the relegation scrap, I wouldn’t have been surprised. What is a shock though is the team in that scrap. The Toffees have been unacceptable for most of the season although they’re picking up points when it matters. Brentford have had a strong first top flight season with a lot to admire. They’re more or less safe so may take their foot off the pedal which should give Everton a real chance to smash through the open door.

Prediction: 2-1

Steviano

I am sure you would have got good odds on Brentford finishing above Everton at the start of the season but the 7 point gap is a fair reflection of a well run club over a shambles. Everton will have ridden their luck if they stay up but I don’t think next season will be any easier for Frank

Newcastle vs Arsenal

Newcastle (#13, 43PTS) vs Arsenal (#4, 66PTS)

Pintsized

Newcastle has been tinkering since survival was guaranteed, while Arsenal continues to scrape every bit of luck to hold on to their #4 spot. Don’t expect a classic, but even with jitters over Champions League dreams, Arsenal has a history of spanking the Geordies.

Prediction: 1-2

Ryan

It seems that Newcastle have probably run out of steam for this season but they’ve done enough to be happy about with a big pot of cash waiting them for the transfer window. It’s a joke that Arsenal are 4th at the time of writing but they’ve capitalised on inconsistency and general lack of quality. It’ll be funny seeing them get found out by superior teams and managers in Europe. However, at this point, they should have too much for a rebuilding Newcastle.

Prediction: 1-3

Steviano

Arsenal are flying again and subject to the North London derby will be looking to cement an unlikely top 4 finish.  Newcastle are safe and will be making plans for next season so this should be an open and entertaining game.

Prediction: 2-3

Southampton vs Liverpool

Southampton (#15, 40PTS) vs Liverpool (#2, 84PTS)

Pintsized

It has been a valiant effort from Liverpool, but their quadruple dreams seem to be all but finished. Pep will literally murder his starting XI if they drop points in the title race, despite how many Klopps’ men can stick past the rest of the league. Southampton petered out during the season’s twilight, but they have secured several shock results over the course of the campaign. Perhaps a club to watch for 22/23.

Prediction: 0-3

Ryan

Has taking on 4 trophies until the end of the season proven to be a step too far for Liverpool? Klopp’s salty attitude towards the typical Spurs style could be showing signs of fatigue. This result might not be as clear cut as it should be depending on how the FA Cup against Chelsea goes. A lot of effort may have been taken out of the Reds by this point which could cause Southampton to capitalise. I don’t see that being the case either way given their fans are not happy at all with Hassenhuttl. For the record, I think the FA Cup will follow a similar structure to the League Cup by going to penalties. From there it should be a coin toss.

Prediction: 0-2

Steviano

Not sure which Southampton team will turn up for this one but they might make it an uneasy night for Liverpool although I still expect them to have enough to take the points.

Prediction: 2-3
