Outspoken Geordie middleweight, Joe Laws, is confident that he will earn a career scalp over former European champion Willie Limond when the pair meet at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow on April 12.
The ‘Benwell Bomber’ is coming off an underdog victory against Michael Hennessy Jr last October and now believes that he can prove his “champion” credentials with a win over Limond.
“I want to know if I can be a champion,” he told IFL TV earlier today. “If I am going to be a champion, I should be taking care of Willie Limond, it is as simple as that.
“He has been there and done it. He is a former (European) champion. Ten years ago it would have been a different story, I probably couldn’t lace his boots. I am 29-years-old now, though, and I feel old – so he must feel ancient.”
Laws stressed that although Limond is now 45-years-old, his trademark power remains and should provide “the toughest fight” of his career.
“He’s got a nasty streak and I know he will bring it,” Laws added. “I have a lot of respect for him, having watched him on the television (in the past), but now I am fighting him I am ready.”
Limond started his professional boxing career back in 1999 when he defeated Lenny Hodgkinz via first-round stoppage at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow.
Over a 24-year career, Limond has fought a number of British greats, including title fights against Alex Arthur, Amir Khan, Erik Morales and Anthony Crolla – as well as an all-Scottish affair last September against Ricky Burns.
The Glaswegian’s career peaked in 2004 when he picked up the vacant European title in a ten-round points victory against Youssouf Dijbaba, although he earned his greatest notoriety during a span two-year span over 2013-14 when he held the Commonwealth title, including a close-knit win over former-footballer-turned-boxer Curtis Woodhouse.
