British welterweight Conor Benn believes that there is “clear evidence” that Tyson Fury sustained an injury that has postponed his blockbuster Heavyweight showdown with Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury’s promotional team, Queensberry Promotions, revealed at 5.49pm yesterday that a cut to his right eye during sparring has postponed the WBC heavyweight champion’s meeting with Usyk.
Conor, the son of former British two-weight world champion boxer Nigel Benn, was speaking with Boxing Social in Las Vegas ahead of his fight against Peter Dobson this Saturday.
Benn said: “It is extremely disappointing but what can you do? It is a bad cut. Everyone is saying it is a fake injury but there is clear evidence. You can see the elbow (that caused the injury).
“People are always going to say something. Everyone heals differently but Fury is a madman. He will probably get stitched up and straight back into training, but the reality is, a cut like that takes two or three weeks before you can start sparring again.”
Footage emerged on X (formerly Twitter) last night which claims to show the moment that Tyson Fury sustained the cut to his eye via an accidental elbow in sparring.
A statement released by Queensberry Promotions acknowledged the “massive disappointment” for fans as the “historic event” to tie up the Heavyweight belts has once again hit another hurdle.
The Gypsy King also expressed his dismay over the unfortunate injury: “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such a superb condition.
“I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed. I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
While a date has not been yet been rescheduled for the WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC heavyweight clash, the fight will remain in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – as confirmed by a Queensberry spokesperson.
