Premier League Predictions Matchday 23: Friday, 21 January

Watford (#18, 14pts) vs Norwich (#17, 16pts)

Pintsized

Oops.

Prediction: X-X

Ryan

If this match was part of a compilation, it would be ‘Now That’s What I Call A Relegation 6 Pointer’. Last season this was a Championship match and now it’s a Premiership game. Go figure. Anyways, this should have tension and some intrigue as we near the second half of the season. Neither team are inspiring, despite the Canaries surprise win against a deflated and defeated Everton. Both sides will settle for the draw.

Premier League Predictions Matchday 23: Saturday, 22 January

Everton (#16, 19pts) vs Aston Villa (#13, 23pts)

Pintsized

Goodbye Rafa, cheers for the memes. With Big Dunc returning to the helm at Goodison for the time being, Everton should find themselves in somewhat safer hands. At the very least, the Toffees won’t be tortured with Rondon spearheading the attack. Gerrard will want to stick one over his Merseyside rival, and with a hugely encouraging substitute performance by Coutinho, they should have the magic to secure the points.

Prediction: 1-2

Ryan

Two legends of the Merseyside derbies meet face to face again albeit in a managerial battle of wits. With Rafa finally ousted to the joy of the Toffees, they return to cult hero Big Dunc to scare the shite out of an underperforming clan. Villa are in a better place with Gerrard but I have a sneaky feeling that the ‘new’ manager bounce will be in play here.

Brentford (#14, 23pts) vs Wolves (#8, 31pts)

Pintsized

Has anyone checked up on the football hipsters? They have been awfully quiet since Brentford’s early form petered out. Add on a strange post-match interview with Thomas Frank, boasting Brentford’s huge achievement of winning the first half against Man United, and a worrying image emerges at Brentford. Wolves have found their teeth in front of the goal after an awful start to the season. Smashing three past Southampton will have done the Wolves’ front three a world of good.

Prediction: 2-3

Ryan

I hope Thomas Frank had enough chips on Wednesday to go with all of that salt from his bizarre post-match rant. What an odd man. They got the better of Wolves at Molineux but with Wolves in better shape and Brentford running out of steam a bit, this could be a good chance to avenge that loss.

Leeds (#15, 22pts) vs Newcastle (#19, 12pts)

Pintsized

As a Hammer, I’m still bitter about Leeds’ heroics last weekend, but I’d far prefer to see Leeds stay up considering their style of football. Daniel James continues to highlight the importance of Patrick Bamford in attack, but the Welshman will find huge holes to exploit in a disorganised Newcastle backline. Leeds have been vulnerable to set pieces in the past, however, and with Chris Wood in the box on the end of Allan Saint-Maximin crosses – it could be a disaster.

Prediction: 2-2

Ryan

Of course Leeds remain the most unpredictable team in the league. Why wouldn’t anyone predict a 3-2 away win at West Ham as it’s such an obvious result? Newcastle with their signings… still couldn’t beat Watford at home. They may have to continue their rebuild in the Championship. As for this match, let’s say that Leeds are burnt out and Newcastle take advantage (not a win though).

Man United (#7, 35pts) vs West Ham (#4, 37pts)

Pintsized

The rowdier yet smaller half of Manchester has to host the biggest club in London – isn’t that so, Ryan? 😉 Moyes will undoubtedly have been sickened with the manner that West Ham conceded against Leeds, but it should only appear to be a blip in a stellar season. Rangnick is still struggling to reel in the huge egos and fractious dressing room but if the German can’t, then who can? Expecting a big of CR7 magic to make me a lifelong Messi fan.

Prediction: 3-1

Ryan

An important Top 4 game – surprising for some but not for others. Both teams coming of a win and loss respectively but neither are consistent right now. Actually the home side are consistently frustrating and the away side are consistently inconsistent. This is a difficult one to predict but I’ll predict an edgy home win if only to go with my heart rather than my head.

Southampton (#12, 24pts) vs Man City (#1, 56pts)

Pintsized

Southampton are a fine team to watch at times. The manner in which they go about their extended Premier League survival is honourable as well. Unfortunately, the rolling titan of Manchester City takes no survivors. Pep will rack up the goal difference and further separate himself from Liverpool/Chelsea.

Prediction: 0-2

Ryan

Teetering mid-table side playing against the champions elect, I wonder how this one will go? Admittedly the Saints have given City some close games recently to suggest that this might not be as obvious as suggested. However, a complete blowout is due soon and this seems like the opportune moment to pull it out.

Premier League Predictions Matchday 23: Sunday, 23 January

Crystal Palace (#11, 24pts) vs Liverpool (#2, 45pts)

Pintsized

Both teams are missing their star players as a result of AFCON. Palace will struggle to threaten without Wilfried Zaha, and even in his goal-scoring drought, Jordan Ayew. Obviously, Salah and Mane will cause Liverpool woes, but Diogo Jota has done a fine job of keeping up their goal tally. This is a match that will be decided in the middle of the park, requiring Henderson and Fabinho to put in a title-saving performance to stay in the race.

Prediction: 0-1

Ryan

The Eagles have always been a side to trouble Liverpool and have thrown up some big performances against the Scousers. Whilst I still think the absence of Salah and Mane is key, Jota is on fine form and picking up the pieces that the former two can’t contribute at the moment. A routine away win.

Arsenal (#6, 35pts) vs Burnley (#20, 11pts)

Pintsized

There may come a day when I have to admit that I got it wrong with Mikel Arteta, but today is not that day. Too often we have seen Arsenal light up a brief run of form before embarrassing themselves against relegation candidates. Burnley are almost certainly destined for the Championship after Chris Wood was stripped from the side, but I still wouldn’t put it past Arsenal to bottle it…

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

Why am I writing about this game? It’s surely going to be postponed like the rest of Burnley’s games last month too. Arsenal are no saints in this matter either to be fair. It just seems destined to be rescheduled for a random Tuesday in a few months. Let’s pretend it goes ahead – Burnley are completely wrecked at the moment with very few players available. Arsenal at least have had some match practice so will be much fitter and more prepared than their opponents. By this proxy, the home team must win.

Leicester (#10, 25pts) vs Brighton (#9, 29pts)

Pintsized

A season of heartbreak for the Foxes who have consistently shot themselves in the foot. The Spurs turnaround will have sapped a lot of the teams New Year energy as they sit awkwardly in the middle of the table. Potter’s Brighton are hilariously efficient with or without the ball, with Alexis Mac Allister emerging as a key player in the centre. When Yves Bissouma returns, Brighton have a realistic chance to climb back into Europa contention.

Prediction: 1-1

Ryan

Leicester somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory after giving away not one but two goals after 95 minutes. Freakish maybe but definitely inexcusable. This has been the tale of their season. Brighton should be confident coming off another draw against the European champions and will fancy their chances here. Exciting draw.

Chelsea (#3, 44pts) vs Tottenham (#5, 36pts)

Pintsized

The once-great Chelsea defence, placing them at the top of the table for the first half of the season, has fallen apart at the seams. Without Chilwell and Christensen, the economic powerhouse have fallen on their sword too many times to count. Conte has surprisingly picked up three wins in the last five, but aside from the Palace victory, Spurs have looked off the pace.

Prediction: 2-0

Ryan

Conte returns to his former Chelsea although some of the home support may be swapping an ‘o’ for another vowel in their chants. This match always seems to have heat and should be a fiery affair. Spurs’ ridiculous luck should run out here at Stamford Bridge.
